enis Villeneuve’s drug-war thriller Sicario has a crackerjack opening, with a downward-sliding double bass dirge making the whole screen vibrate with threat. Emily Blunt, as the head of an FBI kidnap-response team in Arizona, is Humvee-driven to the house owned by a Mexican cartel. She doesn’t seem entirely sure what she’s going to find in there, but it’s unlikely to be good.
Even before the explosive sight of this monster vehicle smashing backwards into the living room, there’s a steely verve to the filmmaking which puts you in mind of what Jonathan Demme achieved in The Silence of the Lambs, or Kathryn Bigelow in the finale of Zero Dark Thirty – both, coincidentally, dark genre pictures with the same species of tough female lead Blunt gets to play here.
Villeneuve (Prisoners, Enemy) is climbing up the ladder of proficient journeywork – next stop, the Blade Runner sequel – and he’s armed himself with great collaborators once again. Roger Deakins, who made the uneven Prisoners look phenomenally grimy and soiled, returns to contribute a sickly, dusty palette and a whole portfolio of killer compositions here.
And there’s that score, which you’d never guess was composed by The Theory of Everything’s Jóhann Jóhannsson. When Villeneuve puts this growling creation under a scene, it really feels like the film means business.
